About Bali Island School - formerly Bali International School

Bali Island School (BIS) is a private, secular, non-profit, day school for Indonesian and expatriate students offering a curriculum taught entirely in English. Our mission is to provide educational excellence in a supportive, secure environment, preparing our students to thrive and succeed as responsible citizens in a changing world. Established in 1986, BIS is the oldest international school on Bali and the only school on the island offering all three IB programmes. BIS is the first school on the island to initiate and organize many events including Bali Maths Competition, Bali School Sports Association (BSSA), Indonesian International Small Schools Activity Conference (IISSAC), Battle of the Bands, BIS College and University Fairs, Bali Model United Nations (MUN), and an international Global Issues Network (GIN) conference.

BIS graduated its first Grade 12 class in 2004 and its first International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma class in 2006. Our total student body is approximately 285 students, with 37 students in the DP Programme. BIS runs on a two- semester calendar with a total of 180 days of school that begins in August and ends in June. Both our expatriate staff (12 different nationalities) and student body (27 different nationalities) represent various regions of the world.

School Life

BIS has a generous offering of activities in sport, academics, and performing arts. There are also many opportunities for students to take on leadership roles either through student government, or as leaders within various school groups. Examples include: drama productions and the International Schools Theatre Association (ISTA) Festival, wind and gamelan ensembles, Student Council, Math Club (students participate in the Southeast Asia Math Competition [SEAMaC]), Model United Nations (students participate in Bali MUN Conference and The Hague International MUN [THIMUN] Conference in Singapore), and Global Issues Network (GIN) Conferences.

BIS participates in two Sports Leagues: the Bali School Sports Association (BSSA), which is made up of international schools on the island of Bali, and the Indonesian International Small Schools Activities Conference (ISSAAC) which is made up of schools from different parts of Indonesia. The BSSA sports are soccer, volleyball, basketball, swimming and athletics. ISSAAC sports are soccer, basketball and swimming.

Grading

BIS does not rank students nor calculate GPAs due to the small size of its graduating classes, the transient nature of the community and the diverse cultural and educational backgrounds of the students. As an IB authorized school, BIS reports student progress using the IB grading system. The system is based on a 1 to 7 scale where marks are derived from a variety of tasks (tests, projects, essays, etc.), assessed both internally and externally against prescribed, subject-specific criteria. The table below indicates the IB marks along with descriptors, and approximate letter grade equivalents. Semester reports indicate the level of achievement, and credits are awarded at the end of each semester. Starting with the class of 2017, passes and fails will no longer be awarded credits, but will be allocated a Pass (P) and a Fail (F) respectively.

IB Marks Descriptor Letter Grade
7 Excellent - A +
6 Very Good - A to A-
5 Good - B
4 Satisfactory - C
3 Mediocre - D
